Rich Rodriguez is returning to West Virginia as head coach, 17 years after leaving for Michigan. The move comes after Neal Brown was fired at the end of the season, with Rodriguez succeeding him. Rodriguez previously coached the Mountaineers from 2001 through 2007, achieving a 60-26 record and popularizing the spread-option offense. His tenure included a near miss at the BCS title game in 2007. Following his time at West Virginia, Rodriguez had a less successful stint at Michigan before coaching at Arizona. He most recently served as head coach at Jacksonville State, where the team went 9-4 in each of his two seasons.
WVU athletic director Wren Baker expressed excitement about Rodriguez’s return, stating that he believes Rodriguez will bring his full energy and commitment to the program. This move comes as West Virginia seeks to regain the sustained success it experienced in the 2000s. Fans are hopeful that Rodriguez’s return will help elevate the Mountaineers back to prominence in college football.
