Syria’s new leaders hold Assad responsible for the suffering of Austin Tice’s family as search efforts persist

Syria’s new leadership holds ousted President Bashar al-Assad responsible for the pain inflicted on the family of missing American journalist Austin Tice for years. The search for Tice, who disappeared in Syria in 2012, continues with no luck in locating him. A recent video claiming to show an American alive in Syria was not believed to be Tice by his family. Tice’s parents express hope for his return following Assad’s overthrow by rebel forces.

The U.S. government has questioned the authenticity of previous videos showing Tice in captivity and believes he may be held by the Syrian government, a claim denied by Assad’s regime. President Biden and his administration are focused on finding Tice, even willing to engage with Islamist rebel forces who recently toppled Assad to secure the journalist’s freedom.

The current rebel coalition in Syria is led by HTS, a group linked to Al Qaeda. The leader of HTS, Abu Mohammad al-Jolani, has tried to distance the group from international extremism in recent years. While welcoming Assad’s ouster, Biden remains cautious about what comes next in Syria, acknowledging a moment of risk and uncertainty.

Tice’s family has received information suggesting he was well cared for before Assad’s regime was ousted, but they still have no clarity on his captors. The Biden administration remains focused on locating Tice, willing to work with various parties to achieve his release.
