Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, Olha Stefanishyna, recently met with members of the European Parliament to discuss the Danish model of joint production with the Ukrainian defense industry. Amid concerns that US support for Ukraine may wane under the new administration, Stefanishyna believes the EU will step in and continue its support for Kyiv, especially with the backing of the new European Commission.
Stefanishyna highlighted the unprecedented focus on security and defense policy within the Commission, signaling potential big changes ahead. The Danish model, which funds Ukraine’s defense industry to enhance self-reliance in arms production, is seen as a model that other countries could adopt.
Poland, expected to prioritize continued military and financial support for Ukraine during its upcoming EU presidency, has been a staunch supporter of Kyiv. However, unresolved issues like disputes over agricultural imports and historical grievances continue to strain bilateral relations.
While expectations are high for increased EU support for Ukraine, the path to EU accession remains uncertain. Despite challenges, Ukraine remains hopeful that with the support of the EU and key allies like Poland, it can strengthen its defense capabilities and continue to navigate its complex relationship with Russia.
