Company states suspect in CEO’s murder did not have insurance through UnitedHealthcare

Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO, Brian Thompson, was not insured by the company, according to UnitedHealth Group. The killing, which occurred on a New York City street, remains under investigation. Police Chief Joseph Kenny stated that there is no evidence of Mangione ever being a client of UnitedHealthcare, but his social media and writings suggest that he targeted the company because of its size.

Mangione was arrested at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania and was found in possession of a gun, silencer, and handwritten documents related to the health care industry. The documents contained phrases indicating a grudge against the industry. Mangione had also reportedly written about targeting a CEO in a notebook. Archived social media posts suggest he suffered from debilitating back pain. The gun used in the shooting was a homemade weapon made from a receiver and a 3-D printer.

Mangione, who has been charged with weapons offenses in Pennsylvania, is fighting extradition to New York, where he will face murder charges in connection to Thompson’s killing. His attorney has stated that Mangione intends to plead not guilty to all charges. The next hearing in the Pennsylvania case is scheduled for December 30, with Mangione expected to be brought back to New York for prosecution.
