Improved Imaging of Metal Joint Replacements with New MRI Technology


The Medical College of Wisconsin has developed new technology, HyperMAVRIC SL, to improve MR imaging of total joint replacements. This advancement allows for more detailed images of areas with metallic implants, providing insight into the tissue surrounding the implant. The technology is now being integrated into GE Healthcare’s MRI scanners to enhance evaluations of implant durability over time. With the growing number of joint replacement surgeries being performed, this novel imaging protocol is expected to positively impact patient outcomes by identifying potential issues with implants early on.

Jason Polzin, General Manager of MR Applications Platform and Research Technologies at GE HealthCare, highlighted the importance of advanced imaging solutions to keep pace with clinical demands. The HyperMAVRIC technology not only improves the quality of images around metallic implants but also enhances workflow efficiency by tailoring the acquisition to the patient’s implant material.

Director of the Center for Imaging Research at MCW, Kevin Koch, PhD, led the research team that developed the HyperMAVRIC technology. He collaborated with GE to integrate the technology into their scanners, emphasizing the necessity of accurately visualizing areas around metallic implants in modern medicine. Koch believes that HyperMAVRIC opens the door to future advancements in imaging technology, ensuring continuous improvement in patient care.

The collaboration between MCW and GE Healthcare represents a significant step forward in enhancing the imaging of total joint replacements, providing clinicians with better tools to monitor implant performance and patient outcomes.
