Rich Rodriguez’s Return to West Virginia Confirmed | Sports

West Virginia is welcoming back native son Rich Rodriguez as the head coach of the Mountaineers, the university announced Thursday. Rodriguez, who previously led West Virginia to three consecutive 10-win seasons and a Sugar Bowl victory over Georgia, will take over after Neal Brown was fired following a 6-6 regular season. Since leaving West Virginia in 2007, Rodriguez has had mixed success at Michigan and Arizona before coaching at Jacksonville State for the past three seasons.

University President Gordon Gee expressed excitement about Rodriguez’s return, saying that West Virginians always find their way home. Rodriguez’s time away has given him a renewed appreciation for West Virginia and the university. His return could potentially lead the Mountaineers back to national relevancy, as the team has struggled in recent years.

Rodriguez brings a wealth of coaching experience, with a winning record of 136-91 in 18 seasons as an FBS head coach. He has guided Jacksonville State to recent success, including a Conference USA title this season. While offensive coordinator Chad Scott will serve as interim head coach for the upcoming Frisco Bowl game against Memphis, the Mountaineers are hopeful that Rodriguez’s leadership will bring them back to prominence. His coaching tenure at West Virginia begins with the upcoming season, where fans are eager to see him lead the team.
