Palestinians arriving in Gaza City find no homes, devastated by loss of family amidst Israel-Palestine conflict

Many families in Gaza City have been displaced due to Israel’s attacks, resulting in a long and exhausting journey back for those who are finally able to return. One such man, Rifaat Jouda, made the journey with his family, including his adult son with Down Syndrome, after being displaced for 15 months during the war.

The destruction caused by the war has left many with no physical homes to return to, with Rifaat’s house in northern Gaza City being destroyed in an Israeli attack. Despite the difficult conditions, many like Rifaat are determined to rebuild and start anew.

Displacement is a central theme for Palestinians, many of whom regret leaving their homes in the north during the war. People like Sami al-Dabbagh and Radwan al-Ajoul have vowed never to repeat the experience of being displaced, emphasizing the importance of home and the pain of losing family members during the war.

Conversations on Al-Rashid Street reveal the loss and hardships endured by Palestinians in Gaza, like Khaled Ibrahim who lost his wife, granddaughter, and brothers in a bombing, and Nada Jahjouh who lost two sons in separate incidents. Despite the physical and mental exhaustion, these individuals are determined to rebuild their lives and find solace in the hope of returning home, even if it means starting from scratch.
