Egyptian President el-Sisi refuses Trump’s proposal to provide refuge for Palestinians | Updates on Israel-Palestine conflict

President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi of Egypt has firmly stated that his country will not participate in the displacement of Palestinians, following United States President Donald Trump’s suggestion that Arab countries should take in residents of the Gaza Strip. El-Sisi emphasized that the deportation or displacement of Palestinians is an injustice that Egypt cannot partake in due to its impact on national security.

Trump’s idea of relocating Palestinians to Egypt or Jordan has been met with rejection from Palestinian leaders and regional countries, who argue that it would undermine the concept of Palestinian statehood and create instability in the Middle East. Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi reiterated that Jordan is for Jordanians and Palestine is for Palestinians, firmly rejecting any such relocation plans.

El-Sisi affirmed that Egypt will work with the Trump administration to achieve peace between Israel and Palestine based on a two-state solution, emphasizing the need for the establishment of a Palestinian state. Displacement has long been a concern for Palestinians, with the fear that leaving Gaza could result in permanent displacement.

Arab countries, including Egypt and Jordan, have warned against any plans to push Palestinians into neighbouring countries, recalling the displacement during the Nakba in 1948. The focus remains on supporting the creation of a Palestinian state in the occupied territories of the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem. El-Sisi and Jordan are important US allies in the Middle East, with significant military aid from the US, which was recently exempted from a funding freeze for global aid programs.
