Hundreds protest against stricter migration policy supported by far-right in Germany

Hundreds of people gathered in front of the CDU party headquarters in Berlin to protest against a stricter migration policy proposed by CDU leader Friedrich Merz. The policy, which aims to turn back more migrants at Germany’s borders, was only able to pass with the backing of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. The rally, organized by Amnesty International and Seebrücke among other organizations, was held under the slogan “Firewall instead of arson”.

Merz’s policy was prompted by a recent knife attack carried out by a rejected Afghan asylum-seeker, resulting in the death of a man and a 2-year-old boy. The motion favouring more rejections of asylum seekers on Germany’s borders narrowly passed in parliament with 348 votes to 345, with the support of the AfD. A second motion with comprehensive reform proposals for a restrictive migration policy and additional security measures was rejected.

The collaboration between the CDU and the far-right AfD has sparked political tensions in Germany, with critics denouncing the move as a breach of taboo. Pro-immigration advocacy organizations have expressed shock and concern over the political shift toward far-right ideologies. Merz defended his policy and the alliance with the AfD, stating that a decision remains right regardless of who supports it.

The vote comes at a crucial time as Germany prepares for upcoming elections following the collapse of the current governing coalition. Polls show Merz’s Union party in the lead, followed by the AfD, while the current governing parties lag behind. The controversy surrounding the migration policy is likely to have a significant impact on the election outcome.
