The Potential of Cell Painting Technology in Drug Discovery


The Institute for Research in Immunology and Cancer at the Université de Montréal (IRIC) has received a grant of $583,654 from Quebec’s Ministère de l’Économie, de l’Innovation et de l’Énergie to fund a project integrating real-time cell painting and artificial intelligence for drug discovery. This project aims to use live observations of cellular morphology to accelerate the process of identifying new drugs. By utilizing fluorescent probes to mark cellular sub-compartments and acquiring images of labeled cells under different experimental conditions, IRIC’s high-throughput screening platform can analyze thousands of experimental conditions in parallel.

The integration of artificial intelligence tools based on machine learning will help classify the cell morphologies observed, allowing for multiple drug discovery applications, including the identification of therapeutic targets, screening of compound libraries, optimization of compounds, and characterization of compound mechanisms of action. This approach has the potential to accelerate drug discovery programs, improve candidate selection, and reduce development costs.

The grant will support IRIC’s high-throughput screening platform for three years, enhancing the services offered at the Institute and in Quebec. Simon Mathien, head of IRIC’s high-throughput screening platform, highlights the importance of integrating real-time cell painting technology to stay at the forefront of new screening approaches. The IRIC team is excited about the potential of this project to revolutionize drug discovery processes and bring about significant advancements in the field.
