Former West Virginia University men’s soccer standout Max Broughton has recently signed a professional contract with Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC of the USL, as announced on January 29, 2025. Riverhounds head coach Bob Lilley expressed his excitement for having Broughton join the team, citing his strong game reading, decision-making abilities, and composure on the ball as valuable assets that will help him transition to the professional level.
Broughton, who hails from Rawtenstall, England, played 45 games for the Mountaineers over the past two seasons, during which he scored two goals and provided four assists. His performance as a center back was crucial in the team’s success, as he played nearly 4,000 minutes and helped secure 19 shutouts. In 2024, he received recognition as a second team All-American and made it to the All-Sun Belt first team.
Throughout his time at West Virginia University, Broughton played a key role in the team’s achievements, including reaching the NCAA College Cup in 2023 and winning both the Sun Belt Regular Season and Tournament titles in the following year.
