Mexico announces significant fentanyl seizure prior to tariff deadline | Global News

Mexico made a significant drug seizure ahead of a tariff deadline imposed by US President Donald Trump, who has been pressuring the country to do more to stop drug trafficking. Authorities in Mexico announced the seizure of 18 kilos of fentanyl hidden in a bus, along with two kilos of heroin. The latest seizure comes as part of a series of major drug hauls in recent weeks, showcasing Mexico’s efforts to combat drug smuggling. Two men were arrested in connection with the seizure of drugs found in the spare wheel compartment of a passenger bus in the northwestern state of Sonora.

In addition to the fentanyl discovery, authorities also reported the seizure of four tons of methamphetamine in Playas de Rosarito, near California. Earlier in December, Mexico announced the largest fentanyl seizure in history, totaling over one million pills. Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid significantly more potent than heroin, has been linked to numerous overdose deaths in the US. Mexican cartels are said to be key players in the distribution of synthetic narcotics in the country, often using chemicals from China to produce the drugs. However, Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has stated that there is no evidence of fentanyl production within Mexico itself. Despite ongoing challenges, Mexican authorities continue to make strides in intercepting illegal drug shipments to help combat the flow of drugs across the US-Mexico border.
