Morrisey takes oath as West Virginia governor, vows to put an end to wokeness and focus on reducing government spending • West Virginia Watch

Patrick Morrisey, a social conservative, was sworn in as West Virginia’s 37th governor, vowing to tackle the state’s challenges and make it a leader in the energy industry. The inauguration ceremony, attended by former governors and featuring a mention of President Trump, highlighted Morrisey’s plans to cut government waste, lower state income tax, and improve education funding.

Morrisey aims to expand the state’s Hope Scholarship program, boost teacher pay, and address the opioid epidemic, for which the state secured nearly $1 billion in litigation settlements during his time as attorney general. He also plans to audit state agencies to find areas to save money and streamline government bureaucracy.

The newly elected governor has assembled a team of 15 executive staff members, including Republican operatives and former legislators, with Tom McCaffery serving as chief of staff. Morrisey, a New Jersey native, is the first West Virginia governor from Jefferson County and was supported by a Republican-led Senate and House of Delegates.

Despite facing budget challenges, including cuts for fiscal year 2026, and issues like foster care system crisis and school closures, Morrisey remains optimistic about the state’s future. The inauguration day festivities included a parade, concert, and ball in Charleston, showcasing the start of Morrisey’s leadership in West Virginia.
