One body recovered, search continues for 28 missing after landslide in southwest China

Emergency teams in China’s Sichuan province are working urgently to locate 28 missing individuals after a landslide, triggered by heavy rains, killed one person and buried homes in the village of Jinping in Junlian county. Nearly 1,000 personnel are involved in the search and rescue efforts, using drones and life-detection radars to locate survivors. Two injured individuals have been rescued, and around 360 others have been evacuated so far.

The landslide, attributed to heavy rainfall and local geological conditions, transformed into a debris flow over half a mile long with a volume of around 3.5 million cubic feet. The rescue operation is being hindered by continuous rainfall and additional landslides. The collapsed area covers about 16 football pitches in size, with many houses carried away by the debris.

Chinese Vice Premier Liu Guozhong has visited the site to oversee the operation and provide support to affected residents. He has emphasized the need for a scientific assessment to ensure the safety of the rescue operation and prevent further disasters, as the surrounding slopes still pose collapse risks. The Chinese government has allocated 80 million yuan (approximately $11 million) for disaster relief and recovery efforts.

Landslides, often triggered by rain or unsafe construction, are a common occurrence in China. Recent disasters, such as last year’s landslide in Yunnan province, serve as a reminder of the importance of preparedness and mitigation efforts to prevent such tragedies in the future.
