Senator Joe Manchin Decides Against Running in 2024 Presidential Election

Senator Joseph Manchin of West Virginia clarified on Monday that he will not be running for president after earlier suggesting he was considering a bid for the Democratic nomination. In an appearance on “CBS Mornings,” he stated that he is focused on speaking for the middle of the country rather than launching a presidential campaign.

Manchin had previously left the Democratic Party in May, citing its shift to the left, and has considered running for president as an independent. Although the Democratic Party seems to be rallying behind Vice President Kamala Harris as the next nominee, Manchin has not committed his support to her.

During interviews on Monday morning shows, Manchin emphasized the importance of addressing issues such as immigration and education in the upcoming election rather than just focusing on criticisms of former President Donald J. Trump. He expressed a desire for the Democratic nominee to not be prematurely chosen and indicated that he would like to see Harris’ platform and positions before deciding to endorse her.

When asked about the possibility of serving as Harris’ running mate, Manchin dismissed the idea, noting the need for a new generation of leadership in the vice presidency. He humorously stated that a 76-year-old vice president would not be ideal at this time.
