Northern England Children’s Playground Unearths Dozens of World War II Bombs

Construction workers in Wooler, England discovered over 170 World War II bombs buried beneath a children’s playground in the town. The bombs, described as practice bombs, each weighing 10 pounds, were found by bomb disposal experts over the course of two days. Due to the potential danger posed by the explosives, the area needed to be evacuated and thoroughly searched to ensure the safety of the playground and its users. It was believed that the area may have been used as a training ground during the war, leading to the burial of the ordnance in one of the pits afterwards.

Similar discoveries of unexploded World War II ordnance have been made in other parts of the U.K., including a recent evacuation in Plymouth after a 1,000-pound bomb was found, and three unexploded bombs in Edinburgh’s streets dating back to 1940. Currently, only a third of the children’s park in Wooler has been cleared, with ongoing excavations being conducted to ensure no more bombs are hidden underneath. Local officials expressed concern over the potential danger posed by the bombs, especially considering that children had been playing on the site prior to the discovery. The bomb disposal team is working to safely remove and dispose of the remaining explosives, with the ultimate goal of reopening the playground for public use as soon as possible.
