The West Virginia Child Advocacy Network recently released its annual statewide data report for the 2024 fiscal year, revealing alarming statistics on child abuse and neglect in the state. The report shows a growing need for services provided by child advocacy centers, with an increase in the number of children served each year. Shockingly, 66% of cases that required a forensic interview revealed abuse, with the alleged offender often being a parent or relative of the child.
Despite the challenging circumstances, child advocacy centers like the North Star Child Advocacy Center continue to provide crucial services to help children heal and seek justice. Last year, 1,900 cases were closed, with charges filed in 846 of them.
The report underscores the importance of continued support for child advocacy centers and the need for policymakers to address the root causes of child abuse and neglect in West Virginia. With their vital work, the WVCAN is there to support and advocate for the state’s most vulnerable children.
