White House fires top federal prosecutors in DOJ and FBI shake-up

The White House terminated multiple U.S. attorneys on Wednesday evening amid ongoing upheaval at the Justice Department initiated by President Donald Trump. The exact number of U.S. attorneys impacted is not clear, but at least two court-appointed U.S. attorneys were let go, including one who had previously worked on Jan. 6 cases. The terminations also affected U.S. attorneys nominated by President Joe Biden and confirmed by the Senate.

Among those who were fired were U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of California Tara McGrath, U.S. Attorney for Maryland Erek L. Barron, and U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina Dena J. King. U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Washington Tessa Gorman, a court-appointed prosecutor, was also removed from her post.

The firings were unusual as decisions to remove U.S. attorneys typically come from the Justice Department. The Trump administration has been through a period of significant unrest since the inauguration, including pardons for Jan. 6 rioters, the appointment of a Capitol riot advocate as interim U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, and the firing of federal prosecutors who had been hired to work on Capitol cases.

The involvement of the White House in the U.S. attorney terminations, as well as other recent actions at the Justice Department, has raised concerns about the politicization of the department and potential long-lasting impacts on law enforcement agencies.
