West Virginia University’s baseball team kicked off the Steve Sabins era with a 4-2 win over Jacksonville on Friday evening. Senior Griffin Kirn impressed in his Mountaineers debut, pitching 5.2 innings and striking out five. Stellar performances at the plate came from junior Logan Sauve, junior Skylar King, senior Brodie Kresser, and sophomore Armani Guzman, each collecting two hits. Guzman also secured his first RBI of his career.
The Mountaineers took an early lead with Sauve and White scoring on a groundout and a sacrifice fly in the first inning. They added two more runs in the second thanks to RBI singles by Guzman and Sauve. Kirn held off Jacksonville until the fifth inning when they managed to score a run. Despite a seventh-inning threat from the Dolphins, the Mountaineers’ pitching held strong with crucial strikeouts from Meyer and Kartsonas.
In the ninth, senior Reese Bassinger came in and closed the game with a game-ending double play. The team will face Jacksonville once again in a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. Fans can stay updated on the Mountaineers by following @WVUBaseball on social media platforms.
