Northern Blizzard and Southern Floods with Eastern U.S. Hit by Severe Storms.

A winter storm is set to bring severe weather to much of the eastern half of the United States this weekend. The National Weather Service has warned of “life-threatening” flash flooding in the Southeast and significant snowfall from the Upper Midwest to New England. The heaviest snowfall is expected in states like Michigan, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Maine. Additionally, severe flash flooding is likely in the Ohio and Tennessee valleys, with up to 8 inches of rain possible in some areas. Parts of Kentucky and Tennessee are particularly at risk for intense rainfall leading to flash flooding.

In the lower Mississippi Valley, there is a risk of thunderstorms and strong tornadoes. Across the mid-Atlantic and Southeast, rain and thunderstorms are expected with isolated risks of heavy precipitation and flash flooding. In the Northeast, moderate to heavy snowfall is expected, with sleet and freezing rain creating challenging driving conditions. The storm is expected to intensify in the Northeast late Saturday into Sunday. Blustery winds may lead to blowing snow and difficult travel conditions. By early next week, the storm is forecasted to move off the East Coast, but cold air and windy conditions are expected to linger over much of the eastern half of the country. Winter weather alerts and warnings have been issued for around 70 million people from Nebraska to Maine.
