West Virginia state Senator Mike Maroney, who was arrested last month on indecent exposure and disorderly conduct charges, is now facing new charges for suspected driving under the influence. Maroney, 56, was pulled over for traffic offenses and arrested after a roadside investigation. He is charged with three misdemeanors related to the incident. Maroney, who has served in the state senate since 2016, was defeated in the May primary election by challenger Chris Rose. This loss followed Maroney’s public opposition to a bill regarding vaccination requirements for nontraditional public school students and a ban on medical interventions for transgender adolescents.
In August, Maroney was removed from his position as chair of the state Senate Health and Human Resources Committee after the previous arrest. The charges stemmed from an incident at a local cigarette and beer store where employees witnessed Maroney allegedly committing an act of sexual gratification in a video lottery room. Maroney was the only person in the room at the time of the incident. Maroney did not respond to a request for comment after his August arrest.
Maroney’s latest arrest comes as he nears the end of his second four-year term as state senator. He has yet to comment on the new charges.
