Increase in flu cases reported in West Virginia

Health officials in West Virginia have reported an increase in flu cases since the end of January. The West Virginia Department of Health’s respiratory illness dashboard noted that influenza outbreaks in the state rose from 12 to 23 during the first week of February, the highest number in nearly a year.

The percentage of people seeking care for flu-like symptoms in emergency departments and urgent care offices has also increased to more than 5% of total visits in the past week. To prevent the spread of influenza, health officials recommend annual flu vaccinations for everyone over the age of 6 months. Adults over 60 should consult with their healthcare provider about RSV vaccinations.

Other preventative measures include proper handwashing, covering your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, and staying home when sick. The public is urged to take these precautions to help reduce the spread of the flu in West Virginia.
