Syria Commences National Dialogue, Excluding Kurdish-Led Militia

Syria’s interim government, led by Ahmed al-Shara, has initiated a two-day national dialogue to discuss the formation of a representative government. Invitations were sent to various community leaders, academics, religious leaders, journalists, businessmen, activists, and others, including Kurds and former detainees of the Assad government.

However, challenges have arisen in uniting Syria’s diverse population, particularly with regards to the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The interim government has demanded that the SDF disarm and join a unified national military force to participate in the dialogue, as it does not represent all Syrian Kurds. Turkey has also been involved in efforts to curb the power of the SDF.

Many Syrians are skeptical about the outcomes of the national dialogue, given the deeply divided nature of the country and the sectarian tensions that exist. There are concerns about the inclusivity of the interim government, led by an Islamist group that has not included other rebel factions that helped overthrow Assad.

The conference participants will issue recommendations for the formation of a new government, constitution, and laws. However, these recommendations are not binding. According to the committee’s spokesman, Hassan al-Dughaim, the recommendations will serve as the basis for the provisional constitutional declaration, economic identity, and institutional reform plan.
