Influencer Summer Wheaton from Los Angeles arrested in connection with deadly car accident

Los Angeles-based influencer Summer Wheaton turned herself in to authorities after a warrant was issued for her arrest in connection to a car accident that killed a 44-year-old man last year. Wheaton, booked on suspicion of manslaughter and drunk driving, was released after posting a bond of $230,000. She was named as a defendant in a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the family of the victim, Martin Okeke. The lawsuit alleges that Wheaton was hired to attend a party at Nobu Malibu where she was expected to consume intoxicants and drove herself from the party in violation of the event’s rules, causing a head-on collision. Wheaton faces charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and causing great bodily injury. Attorneys for Okeke’s family did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Representatives for Nobu Malibu and related entities also did not respond. Wheaton makes content about travel, fashion, and faith for her Instagram followers, but has not publicly addressed the crash. In a December video, she reflected on the challenges she faced and promoted her faith-based planner. The Okeke family is seeking damages without limitation and a full jury trial. An attorney for Nobu denied that Wheaton was hired or contracted by the restaurant and said they followed city permit conditions.
