Starting May 2025, West Virginia residents must have a REAL ID to board a plane – WTRF

Starting in May 2025, residents of West Virginia will be required to have a REAL ID in order to board an airplane. This new deadline comes as the state works to comply with federal regulations aimed at improving the security of identification cards used for travel.

The REAL ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005 in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks, with the goal of setting minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards. The law has been gradually phased in over the years, and now West Virginia residents will need to have a REAL ID if they plan to fly domestically.

To obtain a REAL ID, residents will need to provide additional documentation beyond what is currently required for a standard driver’s license. This may include a birth certificate, social security card, and proof of address. The process can be completed at a West Virginia DMV office.

Failure to have a REAL ID by the May 2025 deadline could result in residents being unable to board airplanes for domestic flights. West Virginia officials are urging residents to start the process of obtaining a REAL ID well before the deadline to avoid any potential travel disruptions.
