30 officers facing allegations of organizing ‘gladiator fights’ among underage inmates at juvenile hall in the L.A. region

California’s attorney general has unsealed an indictment charging 30 detention officers at Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall in the Los Angeles area with child abuse for allegedly allowing and encouraging gladiator fights among youths. The indictment alleges that officers stood by as children and teenagers engaged in fights, resulting in physical injuries and psychological harm. Attorney General Rob Bonta stated that the officers failed to intervene when they should have, taking advantage of the vulnerability of the victims. The fights came to light after a video was leaked showing one youth being attacked by others while officers watched. The officers have been placed on unpaid leave pending further investigation.

The L.A. County Deputy Probation Officers Union has pledged to support the officers and emphasized the presumption of innocence until proven guilty. Despite the challenges faced by juvenile detention officers dealing with violent youths, the union asserts that its members are committed to professionalism and advocating for their safety and integrity.

Each of the 30 officers is charged with felony child abuse, with potential prison sentences if convicted. Some face additional charges of conspiracy and misdemeanor battery. The officers arraigned have pleaded not guilty, and those still awaiting arraignment will appear in court in April. The county probation department has taken action to remove officers accused of abuse and misconduct. L.A. County Supervisor Janice Hahn has expressed support for firing guilty officers, emphasizing the responsibility of caregivers to protect and care for vulnerable youths in their custody.
