Officials in West Virginia are emphasizing the importance of seatbelt usage in preventing serious injury or death in motor vehicle accidents. In 2022, 49% of all passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes in the state were unrestrained. The Governor’s Highway Safety Program is leading a Click It or Ticket enforcement campaign to increase seatbelt usage in the state.
GHSP Director Jack McNeely highlighted the need for increased enforcement day and night to save lives. Despite a decrease in seatbelt usage to 91.9% in 2024 from 93.0% in 2023, officials are committed to ensuring that every person in every vehicle is properly buckled up. McNeely stressed that wearing a seatbelt is the best protection against death or injury in a crash.
He urged the public to view receiving a ticket for not wearing a seatbelt as a wake-up call, as the consequences of not buckling up are far greater. The Click It or Ticket enforcement campaign will continue through the 25th of the month. Remember, seatbelts save lives.
