The Republican Party’s dominance in West Virginia continues to grow, with 44 out of the state’s 55 counties now having more Republicans than Democrats. This shift is particularly evident in Kanawha and Fayette Counties, long-time Democratic strongholds that have now seen the number of Republicans surpassing Democrats.
In Kanawha County, Republicans now slightly outnumber Democrats, with similar numbers in Fayette County. While the difference may not be significant, the trend has been ongoing for several years, with more counties flipping to the Republican side. Statewide, 41 percent of registered voters are Republicans, compared to just 30 percent who are Democrats.
West Virginia Republican Party Chairman Matt Herridge sees this shift as symbolic, especially in Kanawha County, which is considered the seat of political power in the state. The reasons for this change include nationalized politics, with the Democratic Party moving further left on issues like climate change, which may not resonate with West Virginians.
The popularity of Donald Trump in the state has also inspired more Republicans to run for office and voters to register as Republicans. With the red wave showing no signs of weakening, only a few Democratic strongholds remain. Logan, McDowell, and Mingo Counties have the most significant Democratic advantage, but even they may soon be engulfed by the Republican wave.
