Medical examiner determines Detroit children died from carbon monoxide poisoning, not hypothermia

The cause of death of two young children sleeping in their family’s van in Detroit was revealed to be carbon monoxide poisoning, not exposure to the cold. Amillah Currie, 2, and Darnell Currie, 9, died after their mother, Tateona Williams, found them unresponsive in the van after it ran out of gas. Toxicologist Aimee Nefcy explained that carbon monoxide could have leaked into the van through a crack, settling at the bottom as it is heavier than normal air. The family had parked in a casino parking garage for safety and to use the bathroom, despite the cold temperatures. The family had sought assistance from a homeless response team multiple times, but no resolution was reached, prompting Mayor Mike Duggan to call for a review of their case. The Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries provided a new home for Williams following the tragic loss of her children. The city and the organization posted a video of Williams receiving the keys to her new home, ensuring she has a safe and stable living environment. The Detroit Police Department is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the children’s deaths, submitting their findings to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.
