Surprise NFL Offseason Trade Involves West Virginia Football Legend

Former West Virginia quarterback and NFL journeyman Geno Smith has been traded from the Seattle Seahawks to the Las Vegas Raiders for a 2025 3rd-Round draft pick. The trade reunites Smith with his former head coach in Seattle, Pete Carroll, who recently took over as head coach of the Raiders. The move indicates that the Raiders are looking to stabilize the quarterback position and are likely to sign Smith to a long-term deal.

Smith, who was drafted by the New York Jets in 2013, has had a tumultuous career with multiple teams before landing with the Seahawks in 2019. Despite playing well at every stop, Smith has struggled to secure a long-term starting role. He was named the NFL Comeback Player of the Year in 2022 and made the Pro Bowl in 2022 and 2023.

The Raiders have been searching for a franchise quarterback since parting ways with Derek Carr in 2022, starting five different quarterbacks in the meantime. There were rumors that Carroll might bring his former star quarterback Russell Wilson to Vegas, but those have been put on hold with the acquisition of Smith.

Smith is the all-time passing leader for the Mountaineers and holds several school records for passing yards, touchdowns, and total offense. His trade to the Raiders marks another chapter in his NFL career, as he looks to finally establish himself as a long-term starter in Las Vegas.
