Texas District Attorney’s Decision Leads to Release of Chiefs Wide Receiver Xavier Worthy from Team

Xavier Worthy, a wide receiver for the Kansas City Chiefs, was released after a district attorney in Texas declined to pursue charges of felony domestic violence against him. The district attorney stated that witnesses were spoken to and they were not accepting the case at that time. Worthy and his lawyers were cooperating with the investigation. The charge against Worthy was assault on a family or household member in which their breath was impeded, but the case was later dismissed. Worthy’s attorneys claimed he was innocent and that the allegation was made by a female living in his home who had been asked to leave due to infidelity. The Chiefs stated they were aware of the situation and gathering information.

Worthy, a highly touted draft pick, had a successful rookie season with the Chiefs, finishing with 59 catches for 638 yards and six touchdowns. He played a key role in their offense, especially after an injury to another wide receiver. The Chiefs relied on Worthy even in the Super Bowl, where he had a strong performance.

In contrast, Rice, another Chiefs wide receiver, was involved in a high-speed car crash in 2024 that led to civil lawsuits and criminal charges. Despite turning himself in and taking responsibility for the crash, Rice faces legal consequences for his role in the incident.
