Cameron Wrestlers Claim Top Spot in West Virginia Class A Rankings


Cameron High School’s wrestling program emerged victorious at the Class A state championship after a three-year hiatus, led by first-year head coach Chad Burge. The Dragons secured the title with a total of 126 points, with senior Slaton Pettit winning a state title in the 150-pound division. In addition, sophomore Eli Tedrow and Braxton Birch had the opportunity to compete for state crowns in their respective weight classes.

Pettit, with a 40-3 record, defeated Braxton County’s Paxton Smith to claim the championship and expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance throughout the season. While Tedrow and Birch faced tough competition and did not secure titles, they showcased resilience and determination in their matches.

In the girls’ state invitational, Tyler Consolidated’s Eliana Winfrey emerged victorious in her weight class, adding to the school’s successful wrestling program.

Overall, Cameron High School’s wrestling team demonstrated exceptional skill and determination at the state championship, with several wrestlers placing on the podium. Coach Burge commended the team’s hard work and performance, expressing pride in their achievements and a hopeful outlook for future seasons.

In the Class AA team race, Oak Glen High School also had a strong showing, finishing in third place behind Point Pleasant and Herbert Hoover. Several other Ohio Valley wrestlers placed on the podium, showcasing the talent and competitiveness of the region’s wrestling programs.
