Highly experienced and decorated assistant coach, Larry Porter, is joining the West Virginia University football coaching staff as the new running backs coach. Porter, who most recently coached at the University of North Carolina, brings 27 years of coaching experience and a successful track record of developing top running backs at various schools.
Porter’s appointment comes after former RB coach Chad Scott left WVU to join the University of Texas coaching staff. WVU head coach, Rich Rodriguez, praised Porter’s coaching and recruiting abilities, highlighting the impact he is expected to make on the Mountaineer running backs.
At North Carolina, Porter coached Omarion Hampton to All-America and Doak Walker Award finalist nods, with Hampton finishing as the second-leading rusher among Power Four players. Throughout his coaching career, Porter has mentored successful running backs such as Jacob Hester, Joseph Addai, and Tatum Bell.
As WVU heads into spring practices, Rodriguez stated that it is too early to determine the players’ strengths on the field. The Mountaineers’ wide receiver group is particularly thin, with most of last year’s production gone. Rodriguez expressed confidence in incoming transfers and returning players to fill the gaps in the wide receiver unit.
Despite the challenges posed by the lack of depth in certain positions, Rodriguez remains optimistic about the coaching staff’s ability to address and improve upon the team’s weaknesses through hard work and dedication on and off the field.
