Ahead of heavy rain, evacuation warnings issued for wildfire-affected areas in L.A.

The Los Angeles Fire Department has issued evacuation warnings for areas impacted by recent wildfires ahead of heavy rain and mudslides expected later this week. The warnings are for areas affected by the Palisades and Eaton fires, which burned through roughly 40,000 acres of land and scorched over 15,000 buildings in January. Southern California is at high risk for mudslides due to the upcoming storms, making residents near recent brush fires particularly vulnerable to debris flows. Sierra Madre Fire Chief Brent Bartlett warned that if a mudflow occurs, emergency crews may not be able to reach trapped residents for days. The LAFD is advising residents to sign up for emergency alerts, create household emergency plans, and restock essential supplies in preparation for potential flooding, mudslides, or storm damage. The warnings will remain in place until Thursday evening. The Palisades and Eaton fires, fueled by hurricane-force Santa Ana winds, killed at least 29 people and were fully contained by January 31. Residents in the affected areas are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety during the upcoming storms.
