Lauren’s Law approved by West Virginia Senate and advances to House for consideration

West Virginia Senators pass a bill called Lauren’s Law (Senate Bill 584) with a strong majority vote of 32-1. This bill aims to keep the deadly drug fentanyl out of the state, following the death of 26-year-old Lauren Cole in July 2020 from ingesting fentanyl. Lauren’s father, Michael Cole, has been working to raise awareness about the dangers of fentanyl and the need for stricter penalties for those involved in the drug trade. The bill increases penalties for charges related to fentanyl and other drug trafficking, as well as creating mandatory sentences without probation options.

The men who sold Lauren the fentanyl-laced drugs were charged with drug delivery death and sentenced to 15 years in prison. The passing of Lauren’s Law sends a message to drug dealers that West Virginia is closed for business, with the aim of deterring drug trafficking and saving lives. Michael Cole has started a non-profit organization called Lauren’s Wish in Morgantown to help those struggling with substance abuse, with a strong track record of success in helping clients achieve recovery.

For more information on Lauren’s Wish and to seek help for addiction, individuals can visit the non-profit’s website and contact Help4WV. Lauren’s Law reflects the ongoing efforts to combat drug addiction in West Virginia and the commitment to preventing further loss of life to fentanyl and other lethal drugs.
