Numerous celebrities proudly claim their Irish roots

Several celebrities may not be commonly associated with Ireland, but they do have Irish roots. Nicole Kidman, Marilyn Monroe, Robert De Niro, Christina Aguilera, Barack Obama, George Clooney, Anne Hathaway, Mariah Carey, and Meryl Streep all have connections to the Emerald Isle. Kidman has Irish and Scottish heritage dating back to free settlers in Australia in 1839. Monroe’s maternal grandparents were American Midwesterners of Irish descent. De Niro’s mother’s parents were Irish, as was his father’s mother. Aguilera’s mother is Irish American. Obama discovered his Irish roots through his great-great-grandfather Flamouth Kearney. Clooney’s paternal great-great-grandparents came to the US from Ireland. Hathaway has Irish ancestry through both parents and is believed to be over 60% Irish. Carey’s Irish ancestors can be traced to her third great-grandfather John Blanchfield. Streep’s great-great-grandparents emigrated from County Donegal to Pennsylvania in the late 19th century. These celebrities, and many more, will likely be celebrating St. Patrick’s Day this year, some of whom will celebrate their Irish heritage.
