Investigators are still searching for Sudiksha Konanki, a University of Pittsburgh student who went missing while on a spring break trip with her college friends in the Dominican Republic. Konanki is a 20-year-old biology junior at the University of Pittsburgh, an Indian citizen and permanent U.S. resident who disappeared on March 6 while at a beach in Punta Cana with friends. Security footage showed Konanki entering the beach area with her friends, who left after 40 minutes while she stayed behind with people she had just met. Konanki’s friends realized she was missing 12 hours later and notified authorities.
Multiple agencies, including Dominican police, the FBI, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the U.S. Embassy liaison, are involved in the investigation. A person of interest has been identified and interviewed, but no suspects have been named. The search effort has included drones, helicopters, divers, boats, and canine units. Konanki’s family traveled to Punta Cana to assist in search efforts, and the Indian Embassy in the Dominican Republic is also involved. Authorities are looking into Konanki’s phone and texts to gather more information.
Despite no signs of blood or violence at the beach, the investigation continues as they search for Konanki. The authorities are operating under the presumption that she is still alive and are pursuing every possible lead. The search has expanded to Macao beach, and officials are interviewing Konanki’s friends, people who interacted with her last, hotel staff, and others who were at the beach during the same time. The hope is to find Konanki safe and bring her home to her family.
