Westwood High School’s boys basketball team had an impressive season that culminated in a trip to the MHSAA Division 3 semifinals in East Lansing. Unfortunately, their journey came to an end with a 76-40 loss to Arts & Technology Academy of Pontiac. Despite the defeat, the team’s coach, Luke Gray, praised their efforts throughout the year and emphasized the players’ positive impact in the community.
Junior Ethan Marta and senior Tristan Miller led Westwood in scoring during the game. However, the Patriots struggled to maintain possession of the ball, committing 21 turnovers that led to easy points for Arts & Tech. The Lions dominated the game with their skill, speed, defense, and shooting accuracy, making 70.5% of their field goals.
Arts & Technology Academy’s head coach, Orlando Lovejoy, highlighted the importance of focusing on their own game rather than scouting the opposition. The Lions’ strong defense and rebounding capabilities contributed to their victory over Westwood.
Despite a slow start and multiple turnovers in the first half, Westwood showed resilience and improved in the later quarters. Still, the deficit was too significant to overcome, and Arts & Tech secured the win to advance to the championship game.
While Westwood’s state finals dreams were dashed this year, the team’s performance and unity throughout the season left a lasting impact. The Patriots will have to regroup and wait for another shot at the title in the future. The MHSAA Division 3 semifinals showcased the talent and tenacity of both teams, with Arts & Tech emerging victorious and moving one step closer to the championship.
