How Israel Violated the Gaza Ceasefire

After accepting a plan by Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff to extend the ceasefire, Israel and Hamas were supposed to discuss phase two of the ceasefire agreement. However, Hamas rejected the proposal, leading Israel to block aid and goods into Gaza. Israel’s military claimed that Tuesday’s strikes were pre-emptive and accused Hamas of trying to rearm. Netanyahu has faced pressure from different groups within Israel, as well as international criticism for the mounting death toll in Gaza. Families of hostages taken by Hamas in 2023 have been pushing for a deal to release their loved ones. With over 48,000 deaths in Gaza since the start of the military campaign, tensions are high within the Israeli government. Far-right members have threatened to quit if phase two of the deal is implemented, calling for the total annihilation of Hamas. This could potentially lead to early elections and Netanyahu being pushed out of power, especially as he is currently on trial for corruption allegations.
