West Virginia University has announced the hiring of Ross Hodge as its new head basketball coach, following the departure of former coach Darian DeVries to Indiana. Hodge, previously with North Texas, has signed a five-year deal and is set to become the 24th head coach in the program’s history. Despite initial skepticism, Hodge’s hiring has received praise from college basketball experts and coaches.
Hodge’s appointment comes after a national coaching search that included other potential candidates such as Ben McCollum, Jerrod Calhoun, and Niko Medved, who have since landed at other Power Five schools. With a rebuilding project on his hands, Hodge will need to address player transfers and graduating seniors, along with replacing the program’s top scorer, Javon Small.
Having spent time as an associate head coach at North Texas, Hodge’s promotion to head coach was a natural progression. His success there includes leading the Mean Green to 46 victories and a final appearance in the National Invitational Tournament this season. Michigan head coach Dusty May and former colleague Grant McCasland have both praised Hodge for his coaching abilities and leadership qualities.
ESPN analyst Fran Fraschilla also commended the hire, noting Hodge’s competitiveness and coaching skills. With a strong track record and support from the athletic director, Hodge is poised to lead West Virginia to success on and off the court. This marks a new chapter for the Mountaineers as they look to build on past accomplishments under their new head coach.
