Cornell University student activist Momodou Taal forced to leave the U.S. after visa revocation

Momodou Taal, a Cornell University graduate student with dual citizenship, announced that he will be leaving the U.S. voluntarily after his visa was revoked following his involvement in a lawsuit against the Trump administration regarding its actions against pro-Palestinian student protesters. Taal, along with two other U.S. citizens, challenged the administration’s executive orders targeting anti-Semitism on college campuses and expelling foreign nationals deemed national security threats. The lawsuit argued that the orders silenced and chilled protected expression critical of the U.S. and Israel. The administration has revoked at least 300 student visas, including Taal’s, and detained green card-holder Mahmoud Khalil. Following the lawsuit, Taal was asked to surrender to immigration authorities and his visa was revoked, preventing the lawsuit from going to court. The lawsuit was dismissed after Taal’s announcement, and he expressed disappointment in the outcome, citing the administration’s disregard for the rule of law. Taal warned that the crackdown on pro-Palestinian activists sets a dangerous precedent for free expression in the U.S.
