Alexander Ovechkin equals Wayne Gretzky’s record for highest number of goals in NHL history

Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin tied NHL legend Wayne Gretzky’s record for most career goals with his 894th goal. He achieved this milestone by scoring against the Chicago Blackhawks in the third period of a game. Ovechkin, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, has lived up to his promise as an offensive force, holding various scoring records including most power-play goals and most goals for a single team.

In addition to tying Gretzky’s record, Ovechkin has won nine Maurice “Rocket” Richard trophies for being the top goal scorer in the league. He has also been a three-time NHL MVP and led the Capitals to a Stanley Cup victory in 2018, earning the Conn Smythe Trophy that year. Despite the success, Washington has not advanced past the first round of the playoffs since winning the Cup.

Ovechkin, currently third in the NHL in goals this season, is 39 years old and has been playing professionally since 2001. His contract with Washington extends through the 2025-26 season. The Capitals are currently leading the Eastern Conference and are second in the NHL overall, positioning themselves well for a deep playoff run.
