Baseball ‘Cats end on even footing with West Virginia State after split doubleheader


West Virginia State had a dramatic comeback victory over West Virginia Wesleyan in a Mountain East Conference showdown at Cal Bailey Field. In a tale of two innings, State scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to stun Wesleyan 6-5 in the first game of a doubleheader. The Yellow Jackets erased a three-run deficit thanks to key hits from players like Michael Bittinger and Tyler Overaitis. Despite the loss, Wesleyan bounced back in the second game, winning 11-8 with strong performances from Thatcher Poteat and Kohei Fujishita. Poteat had five RBIs, including a triple and a double, while Fujishita had three RBIs. State’s Kyle Waters had an impressive game as well, with two home runs and five RBIs. Wesleyan’s Luke Burner and Alex Smith also contributed with extra-base hits. Eplin was resilient on the mound for Wesleyan, despite giving up eight runs. The series showcased excellent hitting and pitching from both teams, making for an exciting matchup.
