House Democrats are targeting Republican-held House seats in districts that President Donald Trump won in the 2020 election in an effort to take back control of the House in the midterm elections next year. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has identified 35 Republican-held seats as top targets, citing recent gains in special elections and historical trends that suggest the president’s party typically loses seats in midterm elections. The target list includes Republican incumbents in districts that Vice President Kamala Harris carried in the last election, as well as familiar battleground districts rated as “tossup” contests. Some of the districts that Trump won by wider margins are also on the list.
In addition to these targets, Democrats are also defending seats that Trump carried in November, and the DCCC has named 26 members of the committee’s Frontline program for incumbents facing tough races. Meanwhile, the House GOP’s campaign arm is targeting Democratic-held seats as they seek to maintain their narrow majority. The list of DCCC targets includes districts in states like Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin. The goal for House Democrats is to flip three seats next year to regain control of the House.
