A new report released by TRIP, a national transportation research nonprofit, highlights the ongoing challenges facing West Virginia’s roads and bridges. Despite significant investments in infrastructure improvements, inflation and increased construction costs are threatening future progress. The report, titled “Keeping West Virginia Moving Forward: Progress and Challenges in Achieving a 21st Century Transportation System,” emphasizes the need for additional funding and work to stay ahead of maintenance costs.
Data from the report shows that 30% of major roads in West Virginia have poor or mediocre pavement conditions, while 19% of bridges are rated in poor condition. The report also reveals that West Virginia motorists spend hours stuck in traffic congestion, resulting in extra vehicle operating costs annually. The state’s traffic fatality rate is also a concern, with distracted driving cited as a major contributing factor.
Officials, including West Virginia Secretary of Transportation Todd Rumbaugh, emphasize the importance of continued investments in infrastructure to improve road safety and efficiency. The report indicates that more funding is needed to address the state’s transportation challenges and ensure the overall condition of roads and bridges is improved for the future.
