West Virginia Counties Influence Tax Formula Change for Morrisey Data Centers: Power Play Resulting from Pushback | Latest News, Sports, Employment Opportunities

A West Virginia Senate committee amended Gov. Patrick Morrisey’s bill encouraging development of data centers powered by microgrids to address concerns raised by county officials. The Economic Development Committee recommended an amendment to House Bill 2014, the Power Generation and Consumption Act. The original bill proposed to divide tax revenue from data centers among state-level funds, causing county officials to worry about losing millions in tax revenue. County commissioners, including Berkeley County Commission President Eddie Gochenour, testified that the property tax provisions in the bill would harm counties. Greenbrier County Commissioner Tammy Tincher, president of the County Commissioners Association of West Virginia, also expressed concerns about the impact on local counties from the proposed tax structure. The Senate committee adopted an amendment that would allocate tax revenue from data centers to various funds, including a personal income tax reduction fund and a county fund. The bill now moves to the full Senate for further consideration. It is crucial for state and county officials to collaborate to address the concerns raised by the proposed bill.
