West Virginia WIC is partnering with birthing hospitals to connect growing families to benefits and support programs earlier. The pilot project began in 2023 and expanded last year, allowing families to leave the hospital enrolled in WIC without clinic visits. This initiative provides access to breastfeeding peer counselors and nutrition education. Over 200 families have already benefited from the program, which is open to all West Virginians. Plans are in place to expand the program to more hospitals in the state. Those interested can contact West Virginia WIC at 304-558-0030 or email nutrition service director Heidi Staats at Heidi.E.Staats@wv.gov. This project aims to ensure eligible families receive assistance as soon as possible, improving access to much-needed support programs for growing families in the Mountain State.
