West Virginia Department of Transportation Recognizes 58 State Highway Workers who Lost their Lives on the Job | News, Sports, Jobs

The West Virginia Department of Transportation (WVDOT) held a memorial ceremony for the 58 state highway workers who have lost their lives on the job at the West Virginia Fallen Workers Memorial near Williamstown. The ceremony was held in conjunction with National Work Zone Safety Awareness Week, which aims to raise awareness about the importance of safe driving through work zones. WVDOT State Highway Engineer Jacob Bumgarner emphasized the need for drivers to slow down, pay attention, and avoid distractions when driving through work zones. The memorial also paid tribute to individual workers who lost their lives on the job, including James Dean Harper, who was struck and killed while patching potholes on the West Virginia Turnpike. The WVDOT is urging drivers to respect work zones and drive safely to ensure that all workers make it home to their families. The slogan for this year is “Respect the zone so we all get home.” Drivers are encouraged to wear orange this week as a symbol of their commitment to work zone safety.
