Alabama Football Bolsters Tight End Position with Transfer Commitment
TUSCALOOSA, AL – Alabama football has strengthened its tight end roster by securing the commitment of Jack Sammarco, previously from West Virginia, who announced his decision via social media on Wednesday. Sammarco, a 6-foot-5, 238-pound athlete, brings a fresh dynamic to a position that has faced challenges during the spring season.
The Crimson Tide entered spring practice with a notable shortage at tight end, especially with Danny Lewis Jr. sidelined and injuries limiting the availability of Josh Cuevas and Marshall Pritchett. This left only redshirt freshman Jay Lindsey as the sole scholarship tight end, intensifying the need for depth.
Having played all 13 games for West Virginia last season, Sammarco recorded one catch for four yards. He entered the transfer portal following the conclusion of the Mountaineers’ spring practice, after contemplating his future and thanking his former program for their support in a heartfelt statement. The former three-star recruit was originally brought in by a coaching staff that has seen significant changes, with Neal Brown being relieved of his duties before Rich Rodriguez took the helm.
Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer expressed caution regarding transfer acquisitions earlier this spring, emphasizing the necessity for new players to align with the team’s culture and chemistry, particularly given the limited availability of scholarships.
Sammarco is viewed as a key asset to help compensate for the loss of tight ends CJ Dippre and Robbie Ouzts, both of whom declared for the NFL Draft. With three seasons of eligibility at Alabama, he is expected to play a vital role in enhancing the run-blocking capabilities within the offense as the spring transfer window remains open until Friday.
