Local Thrift Store Combines Sustainable Shopping with Charity
St. Andrew, Jamaica – Thrift enthusiasts can experience a unique blend of sustainability and altruism at Back on the Rack, a charity thrift store located at 28 Collins Green Avenue. Founded two decades ago to support the Missionaries of the Poor’s feeding program, this monthly event continues to thrive, offering customers the thrill of finding hidden treasures while contributing to a meaningful cause.
On a lively Wednesday morning, Penelope Jane Stewart, affectionately known as ‘PJ’, and her dedicated team of volunteers were busy sorting through donations from local patrons and international supporters in preparation for the day’s sale, running from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Stewart recounted the origins of this initiative, born from casual conversations with friends in the early ’90s. Inspired by excess clothing from beauty pageants, their brainstorming led to their first fundraising fashion show, which successfully provided nutritious meals to residents in need. Today, a portion of each monthly sale’s proceeds continues to support this mission.
Janet Wright, a long-time volunteer, emphasized the joy of contributing to such a cause while skilfully organizing household items and decor for display. "Everything we receive is gratefully accepted,” she explained, noting how popular figurines and kitchenware draw regular customers.
Regular shopper Lorraine highlighted the importance of sustainability in her thrifting journey, stating, "I come here at least once a week; it’s all about reusing." With low prices starting around $300, the monthly sale attracts diverse shoppers.
For those planning to visit, early arrival is recommended for the best finds. Bring cash and a friend to share in this rewarding shopping experience.
